Pentatonix - Hot off the Press

Less than a day and Almost 100,000 well deserved viral views

Check out Sing Off’s Season 3 Champions Penatonix and their Fresh and AMAZINGLY shot performance of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”  While everyone was SICK, I must admit it I was distracted by Kirstie Maldonado and her hot BAMFery. And that’s coming from a gay man…Yum.

But look at this… Just one month ago the Indie Band, Walk of the Earth covered the SAME GOTYE SONG in a dynamic and peculiar way. 5 People playing one Guitar simultaneously by five people using different strings and surfaces, for all the instrumentation.. WATCH it!

48,949,599 well deserved viral views
Some think that these covers stole Gotye’s artistic thunder…

Tell that to his 63,355,172 views on this original video.

Get it. Gotye. That number doesn’t even include all of the other YouTube uploads of the video with Lyrics, fan music videos, etc.

“Australian-Belgian singer and songwriter Gotye (birth name Wouter ‘Wally’ De Backer) from his third studio album Making Mirrors, and features New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song was written by Gotye himself, lyrically about the experiences he has had with relationships. The song was released on 6 July 2011 as the second and lead single off the album.”  - Wiki

In seven months the song took on a life of its own: Got grown, went to YouTube University, Got Popular, found a gay partner, got married in Cali(See Ya PROP 8!), had a Coverbaby, and that Coberbaby had a Coverbaby and that one, and that one… Musical Birth is Beautiful. Yet who can be surprised that Google’s YouTube is the Patriarch of this foster home of an ever growing network of “Song Families” A popular mainstream example of this would be Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” getting covered by everyone and their mother: Including the EPIC John Legend, then that version getting covered by Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff on Glee.

Even Fromuth Productions has been a part of this Family tree. Look at the reverse evolution of the silky smooth vocals of Melanie’s EGO performance of Slow Motion:

The Babycover

The MamaCover – Lydia Paek

The Grandma Original – Karina Pasian

This just goes to show that amazing covers and YouTube benefit all: The cover performers, the videographers, the viewers, and especially the reach and popularity of the original artist. Dear SOPA and PIPA…LAY OFF!
